Felt is a textile material that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers together. Felt can be made of natural fibers such as wool or animal fur, or from synthetic fibers such as petroleum -based acrylic or acrylonitrile or wood pulp -based rayon. Blended fibers are also common. Felt from wool is considered to be the oldest known textile. Sumerian legend claims that the secret of feltmaking was discovered by Urnamman of Lagash. At the end of their journey, the movement and sweat had turned the wool into felt socks. Feltmaking is still practised by nomadic peoples Altaic people: Mongols ; Turkic people in Central Asia , where rugs , tents and clothing are regularly made. In the wet felting process, hot water is applied to layers of animal hairs, while repeated agitation and compression causes the fibers to hook together or weave together into a single piece of fabric.
Wool felt is made in mills, which were traditionally found in rural areas, close to the wool producers, and near a source of water. The machine production of wool felt is a highly specialized process that requires expertise. Today, only a few felt mills that remain that follow the procedures, and often use the machinery, that were developed over a century ago. After shearing, the wool is sorted by quality and color. The wool has different qualities depending on which body part of the sheep it comes from.

Since the sheep are free-roaming grazing animals, vegetable matter from plants and shrubs can get caught in the fleece as the sheep brushes against it. To remove this debris, the wool must be cleaned. By washing with water, some of this vegetable matter and lanolin is removed.
