Produce fabrication other intersectoral production

The paper aims to contribute to the renaissance of a manufacturing oriented view of economic system. It begins by providing a critical review of the main turning points in the manufacturing versus services debate evaluating the analytical and empirical arguments deployed in favor of each view. It goes on to describe the profound transformations in industrial systems and the redistribution of manufacturing production across countries over the last two decades which challenge some of the assumptions on which the service oriented view is built. This section concludes by reviewing old and new rationales supporting a manufacturing oriented view.

America’s Industrial Resurgence: How Strong, How Durable?

Academic journal article Journal of Southeast Asian Economies. Services supply chains are becoming important drivers of trade and growth in Asia. In particular, the value chain activities within supply chains are critical to fully exploit the region's potential. Recent literature also recognizes that activities related to services and investment in global value chains GVCs are important for maintaining competitiveness of trade and investment Kimura ; Miroudot ; Gereffi and Fernandez-Stark ; Baldwin In this regard, the global production value chain provides an integrated framework to understand the value-creation activities along the supply chains linking domestic industries to regional and global production and consumption structures.

Several scholars have highlighted the impact of services activities in the dynamic transformation of domestic and regional industries to participate in global production value chains related to trade and investment.

The new trend of "servicification" of manufacturing is also picking up pace. Increasingly, manufacturing firms are starting to produce and export goods that are bundled with key services, such as installation, maintenance and repair Kimura ; Miroudot The role of such servicification in developing dynamic value-creation activities, ultimately leading to greater competitiveness and productivity of the firms, is very critical for the region Vandermerwe and Rada For example, it has enabled several manufacturing firms of OECD countries to upgrade from low-end fabrication tasks to high-end services jobs like factory-less goods production, upgrading their position in GVCs Lodefalk A number of academic papers demonstrate that servicification improves the performance of manufacturing firms through several channels, including: higher productivity Anukoonwattaka, Scagliusi, and Mikic ; Lodefalk ; Lanz and Maurer ; more diversified export varieties Kelle ; better access to foreign markets Lodefalk ; and larger profits Mastrogiacomo, Barravecchia, and Franceschini Services activities are also becoming vital for domestic industries to participate in global production value chains.

Activities related to information and communication technologies ICT , transportation and logistics are seen as important linkages that facilitate global production networks. Moreover, services from developing countries are important input sources for multinational firms to reduce their cost of production and improve productivity by outsourcing inefficient activities. For instance, back-office activities and call centres in India and the Philippines allow overseas manufacturing firms to fragment and improve their overall production process Lodefalk In a traditional value chain framework, services only support core manufacturing activities.

Lately, however, supply chain activities that are independent of linkages to manufacturing are also witnessing significant growth Gereffi and Fernandez-Stark The developments in sectors like education, business services and wholesale activities are prominent examples.

This suggests that there might be ample opportunities for East Asian countries at various stages of growth to participate in production value chains.

This paper and examines services from a supply chain perspective and discusses policy implications for liberalization of the sector in East Asian countries. Apart from outlining the special issue, it looks at the global value chain activities of services that are independent of linkages to the manufacturing sector and derives recommendations to improve the participation and positioning of the regional countries in GVCs. The study also aims to map the fundamental factors of production, institutional reforms, and soft and hard infrastructure for various stages of the services supply chain activities in the region.

Manufacturing comprises more than half of the Philippines's industrial sector and accounts for almost a quarter of the country's Gross Domestic Product GDP. From an annual growth rate of 5. Manufacturing industries have higher employment, income and output multipliers relative to the agriculture and services sectors. Manufacturing also promotes stronger inter-industry and inter-sectoral linkages, firm productivity, technological development and innovation. As such, the growth of the manufacturing industry improves the upgrading and diversification in the agricultural sector, as well as drives demand for higher value-added services.

Then, industrial performance improved dramatically through the s and appears pervasively brighter today. A look at any group of industries, however, reveals important differences in the factors behind the resurgence--in industry structure and strategy, research performance, and location of activities--as well as similarities in the national policy environment, impact of information technology, and other factors. Industry in examines eleven key manufacturing and service industries and explores how they arrived at the present and what they face in the future. It assesses changing practices in research and innovation, technology adoption, and international operations.

Introduction: Services Supply Chain-The Impact on Trade and Development in East Asian Countries

By facilitating intra-African trade and creating an integrated African market of 1. The commercial opportunities and competitive pressures unleashed by the AfCFTA should also stimulate increased domestic and foreign direct investment, which in turn should foster technological upgrading — an important driver of industrialization. Implementation is crucial… But the AfCFTA can only support industrialization if it is properly implemented, and African countries have a mixed record on implementing the trade agreements they have signed through their regional economic communities RECs. Most RECs have established functioning free trade areas, but not all member states participate, and those that do often fail to honour specific commitments. This gap between agreement and implementation has hampered trade growth in Africa and undermined the transformative potential of intra-regional trade. To maximize gains from the AfCFTA, they should also complement it with efforts to improve trade-related infrastructure and address non-tariff barriers to intra-African trade, including inefficient customs practices. Analysis from the International Monetary Fund suggests that addressing infrastructure needs and non-tariff barriers could have a much bigger impact on intra-African trade than tariff liberalization under the AfCFTA.

In the TR90 region, inter-sectoral mobility of production factors such as capital and labor is limited. On the other hand we can say that the sectoral dominance in the TR90 region has developed in favor of the service sector with the development of tourism and that the share of agriculture has not changed significantly due to the continued dependence of hazelnut and tea on the economy of the region. The TR90 region produces lower added value than the country in general. It is seen that the service sector stands out in the distribution of the added value produced in the Region by sectors and produces approximately three times more value added than industry and agriculture.

Digital fabrication combines virtual and material worlds; transforming thoughts into things, and things into data. It fosters complex and varied communities while enabling the pursuit of unique individual outputs. Current literature on digital fabrication concentrates on its technical and economic potential, with little attention yet being paid to the fundamental questions of how the technology might affect our understanding of identity, embodiment, or creative processes. Using case studies and experiences gained from ground-breaking fieldwork, "In the Making" explores these processes and their products from both cultural and aesthetic perspectives; with emphasis on its human interactions, not on technology.

Back in the pioneering aviation, defense and military manufacturer made the bold decision to combine both lean methodology with six-sigma best practice. The outcome: a hybrid strategy known as Lean Sigma which has helped the company reduce waste, boost efficiency and ultimately, stay competitive in a saturated marketplace. We take a look at the strategy today and how the multination conglomerate implements it for global unity and success. From the likes of GE to Jaguar Land Rover, from Philips to Siemens, we take a look at what makes these big brands such appealing companies to work for, as told by their current employees. As always we also showcase some of the most influential companies operating on a global scale in the manufacturing sector. Bosgraaf specialises in cheese moulding, handling and pressing systems as well as rack brining, treatment and maturation installations.

Technological change, in turn, is a crucial driver of competitiveness in the man- ufacturing industry, and is thus of particular interest for both business leaders and policymakers.

Discovery of petroleum in commercial quantity in the early s appears to have retarded output growth in the sector because there was a shift from agriculture to oil and gas. Therefore, the country has gone through quite a variety of ordeal in food production since the oil boom era. Government has formulated policies and programmes to address the performance of agriculture. It appears many of these efforts have failed resulting in large scale food imports and consequent adverse balance of payments. With the aim to devise a path to output growth, steps to attain value chain are examined in this paper having reviewed previous studies.
