Asbestos Cement Sheets

The slurry is dewatered by a machine using a rotary sieve cylinder and a continuous felt to produce a very thin layer of asbestos cement which is wrapped around a mandrel under pressure until a pipe with the desired wall thickness is produced.

The mandrel is then extracted and the pipe is cured by passing through a tunnel-like low temperature oven followed by immersion in or spraying with water, or by autoclaving. After curing, the ends of the pipe lengths are cut and finished to receive couplings that are produced by cutting larger diameter pipe into sections. The incapsulated asbestos fibres act as a reinforcing material to form an intrinsic part of the cement matrix.

The effective control of chrysotile asbestos dust in the work place can eliminate health risks to workers. In the manufacture of asbestos cement products most of the processes are "bound-in" or wet. When the asbestos is present in a slurry a wet mixture there is no possibility of dust emission.

Such processes require only relatively simple safe work practices often referred to as "housekeeping". These include: wetting of the process where applicable; immediate and proper clean-up of waste generated by the process; vacuuming or wet removal of all dust particles generated; and avoiding practices such as dry sweeping which generate dust. These dust control techniques are well-known, easily available and require relatively inexpensive and unsophisticated equipment.

The capital and operating costs of these methods consist of only a small fraction of the total costs of the plant. Dust emissions from other components of the manufacturing process can also be easily controlled. Much of the waste collected during the production or housekeeping process can then be reintroduced into the system, thus avoiding environmental pollution and saving on raw material costs.

Frequent monitoring of the work place environment and periodical medical assessments of the workers will verify that the techniques in place are effective. The implementation of a dust control program can produce highly effective results using only the most basic of techniques. Processing such as wetting and vacuuming can dramatically decrease dust levels in plants which may previously have had ineffective or minimal controls.

The implementation of local exhaust ventilation and filtration systems will further lower dust levels. References: 21 Bragg, G. Return to Information on Asbestos. Asbestos Cement pipe manufacturing process. Site designed and hosted by Creative Arts.

A method of improving the filtration rate of a waterlaid web formed from a water 1 slurry of Portland cement and asbestos fibers, by addition to the slurry, just prior to the web formation, of a small percentage of harsh mineral glass fibers. This invention relates generally to cement-asbestos products, and to an improvement in the manufacture of sheet products containing hydrated cured Portland cement as a cementing and bonding material, and asbestos fiber as a structural reinforcing material.

Chrysotile asbestos exposure in the manufacturing of thermal insulating boards

For much of the 20th century, asbestos cement sheets provided builders with a rugged solution for simple roofing and siding projects. While these products were cheap to manufacture and buy, their true cost emerged years later in the form of deadly asbestos-related illnesses. Fibrous cement sheets are more durable than drywall and easier to work with than concrete, and they have numerous applications in construction. Today, the fibers in cement sheets are usually made of cellulose, a substance found in plants, but for the first eight decades after fibrous cement sheets were invented, they were primarily made with asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos fibers has been extensively studied in milling, mining of asbestos fibers, and in industries manufacturing asbestos—cement sheets, pipes, etc.

Only high-density chrysotile products are manufactured and sold today. The unique feature of these products is that the chrysotile fiber is encapsulated in a matrix of cement or resin, preventing the release of fibers. These products are used in some sixty industrialized and developing countries.

Tara Strand Senior Content Writer. Jennifer Lucarelli Legal Advisor and Contributor. Asbestos cement products were largely popular throughout the mids, particularly with piping, but also with an array of roofing materials and other building materials. Transite was respected for being easy to handle, strong, resistant to corrosion and having low friction. AC pipes were used for water, sewage systems, drainage pipes and storm drainage systems, withstanding corrosion from sulfides and soil. These products could also drop operating costs, as water flowed seamlessly through the smooth, low-friction material.

A cohort study has been carried out of subjects employed between and at an asbestos cement factory in England. The production process incorporated the use of chrysotile asbestos fibre only, except for a small amount of amosite during four months in No excess of lung cancer was observed in the mortality follow up by comparison with either national or local death rates, and analyses of subgroups of the workforce by job, exposure level, duration of employment, duration since entry, or calendar years of employment gave no real suggestion of an asbestos related excess for this cause of death. There was one death from pleural mesothelioma and one with asbestosis mentioned as an associated cause on the death certificate, but neither is thought to be linked to asbestos exposure at this factory. Other suggested asbestos related cancers, such as laryngeal and gastrointestinal, did not show raised risks. Although the durations of exposure were short in this study, the findings are consistent with two other studies of workers exposed to low concentrations of chrysotile fibre in the manufacture of asbestos cement products which reported no excess mortality. Frank is an occupational physician who has had special interest in occupational lung diseases and occupational cancers. Background: Asbestos products are manufactured and used in Sri Lanka in the construction and automobile industries. Objective: To determine radiologically if exposure to asbestos caused lung disease among workers handling asbestos products, and to generate data in Sri Lanka where no such data exist due to poor reporting and a poor surveillance system. Methods: Following ethics approval and written consent plain chest X-rays and exposure data were obtained in workers in asbestos manufacturing, building construction, building demolition, tsunami debris cleanup, and other trades.
